The sands of time, eroding one grain at a time...
Water, dripping drop-by-drop...
La Jolla had a few nibbles at the University City goal the first 21 minutes of the Vikings' home game at UC Fri., Feb. 5, due to construction at Edwards Stadium. But nothing serious.
Finally, the floodgates opened as captain Andrew Estrella slugged a ball in with 8:20 left in the half. Minutes later, at 5:42, he punched another right-footer in. The party almost became a carnival when it took a full-body dive and grab by Centurion goalie Carlos Gonzalez with only seconds left in the first half to stop a third Estrella clear shot on goal.
In the second half, Coach Marcos Gonzales' crew (4-5-4) enjoyed even more freedom. Forward Cesar Canton scored a pair of goals to match Estrella's. And the steady Noah Shen put in a penalty kick for a 5-2 La Jolla victory.
In their previous league meeting last month, the two teams had played to a draw.
Said Estrella, a junior, before the game, "It's been a lot of up and down. Mostly down," during the first round of league play.
In all, Gonzalez had seven saves in goal for UC (2-14-2 overall).
