After being pinned by Imperial's Nathan Hart in the first round, Joe Costa of La Jolla had some success in back-to-back matches in the consolation bracket of the Holtville Wrestling Tournament Fri., Jan. 29.
The 134-pounder first pinned Luis Chino of Hoover in 2:57 (midway through the second of three periods). Then the wiry Costa, just getting the kinks out after a two-hour ride from San Diego that morning, held Southwest (Imperial Valley) opponent Joel Alvarez's shoulders to the mat for a two count in only 36 seconds.
It was a taste of heaven for the Viking, something some of his teammates never got the whole weekend in the sprawling tourney at its remote, rural location. And not just once, but twice.
Costa later lost his second match of the day, eliminating him from the competitive portion of the tournament. But not before dealing Chino his second defeat, dropping him out of the bracket, and then likewise Alvarez.
