Elliot Austin pinned Cathedral's Joseph Nguyen in three minutes, 25 seconds at 115 pounds in the highlight for La Jolla in a 48-18 Western League wrestling loss.
Asked after the meet how he did it, the sophomore replied, "I have no idea. I just wrestle. Actually, I got angry every time someone got beat.
"I do it for the team," he continued. "That's it."
In an exhibition match before the official meet, the Vikings' Andrei Sebald pinned Cameron Mandrona in 3:19.
Several Vikings were sidelined by illness, or in the case of Joe Costa, a broken toe, according to assistant coach Ryan Lindenblatt. Only six wrestlers competed for the visitors in an abbreviated meet.
Senior Jake Harvey, who won by forfeit, gave an impassioned speech to his teammates after the meet about the City Conference meet coming Sat., Feb. 9, and the push for CIF.
The varsity has at least four seniors--Jesus Castorena, who did not make the trip to Cathedral, Chris Abarca, who did not dress out, Harvey, and Jack Hathaway--one junior, Griffin Young, and three sophomores, Austin Clerget, Christophe Naviaux, Costa, and Austin.
