La Jolla's girls water polo team has achieved the highest power ranking and, as a result, the top seed in the Open Division of the CIF playoffs starting Sat., Feb. 20.
The Vikings (23-4 overall, 4-2 in the Western League) finished second to Bishop's (23-6, 5-1) in the league. So the question left to be determined is: Who is the best team in CIF?
It's great to have the best power ranking, which Coach Keller Felt's squad achieved through strength of schedule--they played and beat the toughest opponents through the regular season.
But the power ranking is just a number. It doesn't win any championships.
And La Jolla, of course, has made it clear many times that its goal is the CIF title.
The Vikings open the playoffs against eighth-seeded El Camino in a 1:30 p.m. game Saturday at Coggan Pool. Bishop's, the second seed, plays the nightcap at 5:15 p.m. against Coronado (13-15, 2-4), the seventh seed.
"The team has been doing great," said Felt after an 11-8 overtime win over Carlsbad, the third seed in the Open Division, and a clobbering of Cathedral, 12-4. The Dons are seeded sixth.
Ciara Franke scored five goals against Carlsbad, and added four more in the win over Cathedral. She now has 61 for the season.
