LJ rugby: Scrimmage at Coronado 1/6

Coach Ethan Willis:
the man, the myth, the legend.

By Ed Piper

Coach Ethan Willis and his band of La Jolla rugby gypsies play a full slate of games home and away this month and next, a schedule posted on Instagram reveals.

At this writing (Fri., Jan. 6), the club team travels to Coronado High to play a scrimmage tonight at 5:30 p.m. The last scrimmage, a date in December before the winter break, was quite an adventure for the newly-initiated among us, with humongous forwards, students from Point Loma High as well as LJHS playing under the Viking banner, and a grimacing player from another team who had his (apparently) broken collarbone in a sling on the near sideline, waiting for a ride to the hospital.

The sport offers a wild brand of running and excitement that attracts the athletes, who often have played another sport but who can really try to shine in this non-mainstream sport--even as a freshman or sophomore.

The released schedule looks like this:

Fri., Jan. 6 - Scrimmage at Coronado High, 5:30 p.m.

Fri., Jan. 13 - Season opener vs. Vista, home, 7 p.m.

Fri., Jan. 20 - at Loyola (L.A.)

Fri., Jan. 27 - vs. San Juan Hills, home, 7 p.m.

Fri., Feb. 3 - vs. Coronado, home, 7 p.m.

Fri., Feb. 10 - vs. Torrey Pines JV at San Clemente High

Fri., Feb. 17 - vs. Carlsbad JV at Army/Navy High

Fri., March 3 - Playoffs

Fri., March 10 - Playoffs

Overall, in their two December scrimmages (the same night) at home, the Vikings showed some early enthusiasm as backs and forwards worked together and the team scored soon after the start of their first contest. Then the initial energy began to dissipate, and La Jolla struggled a little the rest of that game, and the one that followed.

Willis' squad will look to sustain that energy more over the length of the workout versus Coronado.
