La Jolla High's wrestlers had their annual weight assessment done at Clairemont High Wed., Nov. 13. This involves getting weighed and measured for height. The weight establishes a baseline for each student athlete that will be monitored throughout the coming season, so as to safeguard against dangerous weight loss to get down to allowable poundage in a particular weight class for a competition.

Ryan Lindenblatt, an assistant coach just returned from deployment by the U.S. Navy to U.S. Central Command in the Middle East, said at the weight assessment that it is likely a few Viking wrestlers will compete in the Rancho Bernardo Takedown Tournament this Sat., Nov. 16, at Rancho Bernardo High School. That will mark the first competition of the season.

The following week, on Sat., Nov. 23, a small contingent of wrestlers will probably make the trek north to the annual La Costa Canyon tourney.

Dual meets for the Vikings begin Dec. 18 against Patrick Henry at home. It will be a non-league tilt.

Returners for La Jolla this year, several of whom were at Wednesday's weigh-in, include Keegan Leonard, junior, 5'7", who wrestled at 132 pounds last year and may go up to 138 this season; Jesus Valeriano, sophomore, 5'6", 145/145; Buzzy Bomberger, sophomore, 5'8", 115/126; Zeke Pearl, sophomore, 5'5", 120/132; Jace Maisel, junior, 5'7", 138/145; Benji Torres, junior, 145/145; and Alex Von Mueller, sophomore, 5'7", 128/134.

Joshua Jasso, playing for the Viking football team, cannot compete until after the football season is over. He is a senior who wrestled at 196 last year.
