Cole Atwell, former Viking star, named
Co-Rookie of the Week for
Brown University.

La Jolla's fourth-seeded water polo team fell behind, 8-3, in the first half against Bishop's in the Open Division semifinals Tues., Nov. 12.

The Vikings eventually succumbed, 16-7, to the top seed, who will play Cathedral Catholic Sat., Nov. 16, for the Open Division title.

Having said that, the season for the Vikings had its high points, most notably 19-year head coach Tom Atwell's 500th career victory.

"Did you tell the reporter about the coach's 500th victory?" Atwell said playfully to his wife, Utahan, in front of a reporter during a late season match.

The Atwells, understandably, were also proud that their son, Cole, a former Viking standout, was named Co-Rookie of the Week in the Northeast Water Polo Conference recently in his play for Brown University, where both Atwell offspring (Lexi is a senior) compete in Division 1 water polo.

The Bears were ranked 19th in the nation at the time of Cole's recognition.
