Rowing: Chantal Lanatta

Chantal Lanatta

By Ed Piper

Chantal Lanatta heads to Newcastle University in northern England in September to row for Percy the Lion. (That's the 1834-founded institution's mascot.)

"My dad Gus is from Buenos Aires (Argentina). My mom Tande is from Mexico City. So I speak Spanish," says the 5'6" alumna of the San Diego Rowing Club. "I attended the San Diego French American School from kindergarten through eighth grade, so I speak French, too."

What major would you guess the Class of 2019 La Jolla High graduate is pre-enrolled in? Of course--International Business Management.

"I've already got the languages," smiles the former Viking.

In a recent sit-down interview with SDRC teammates Kate and Liz Bolitho, sisters who have attended Bishop's, Lanatta made it clear that the heavy physical demands of rowing pretty much make it the single sport for women and men who go out for it."

"We've talked to students who have gone into rowing and tried to continue playing others sports," she said. "They said rowing is different. Rowing is exhausting. You can't juggle it with other sports."

Kate Bolitho just graduated from Bishop's in May. Liz will be a junior there when she resumes studies near the end of August.

Lanatta and the elder Bolitho have been among the leaders of the highly-successful SDRC girls program. SDRC's boat finished second among 84 entrants in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, a grueling five-kilometer race that winds under bridges and around landmarks with thousands of fans cheering and shouting from land.
