LJ g golf: JV, freshmen

By Ed Piper

La Jolla's girls golf program under long-time coach Aaron Quesnell is strong enough to draw six freshmen this year. In fact, says Quesnell, "We had to cut six girls, but this (varsity and junior varsity) is what we could handle."

The "we" includes long-time assistant Christie Quinn, a competitive golfer and technical coach. The formula has worked well, with the Vikings ascending to a third-place finish in CIF Division 2 last Spring.

The six freshmen, who will compete for the junior varsity or "B" squad (the players who were cut were invited to take part in practice, Quesnell said), include Callahan Armstrong, Stella Artukovich, Ella Stevens, Chloe Lynn, Paige Repp, and Cate Alexander. In addition, Mica May is a sophomore.

Coach's comments on individuals:

Callahan: "She is motivated to play and to get better at golf. She hits the ball well, but she wants to get better. She's competitive."

Stella and Ella: "Stella and Ella are similar in that they're new to the sport. They can make decent contact with the ball. It's just a matter of playing more."

Chloe: "She's similar to Stella and Ella. They have good raw talent. It's just a matter of playing more and getting their accuracy down."

Ditto for Paige and Mica.
