LJ g golf: Devitt out of nowhere

By Ed Piper

"Gloria could end up being our number five," said La Jolla golf coach Aaron Quesnell of his sophomore golfer, Gloria Devitt, who just started playing the sport last year.

"She said she's not going to miss golf with soccer, because she realizes (her position)," said the veteran coach as he juggled duties coaching up some of his seven new freshman golfers in their "B" team match versus Mira Mesa at the Mission Bay Golf  Course Wednesday afternoon, August 21.

Devitt is a stellar defensive player in soccer, and is a member of a solid club team that plays during the fall concurrently with the CIF girls golf season.

Gloria, following in the footsteps of her older siblings, also has the advantage of a supportive dad who comes to many of his children's athletic contests. "He has the right approach, too," said Quesnell, who appreciates the "let the girls play and enjoy it" approach that this and other parents have--in contrast to the killer parents who try to live out their athletic goals through their kids.

"Amalia (Parzen) is hitting the ball farther. She and Olivia Krasuski will be our one and two (players of the six on the varsity, which is still awaiting its first match of the season). Chloe Kim is probably going to be the three."

A trio of returners will populate the four-five-six slots on varsity, with Devitt the wild card possibly ascending to number five.

Meanwhile, on the course, the handful of Viking freshmen--including two lacrosse players--went through their strokes with the Mira Mesa girls. Mira Mesa has an enormous program, with 30 girls making up A (varsity), B (junior varsity), and C teams.

Quesnell said he had to cut six girls who came out for the Viking program--"I invited them to come to practice"--because he and long-time assistant coach Christie Quinn can only handle an A and a B team. He is a classroom teacher, while Quinn is a walk-on (non-teacher) coach.
