LJ wrestling: Way's story

By Ed Piper

Senior Ronald Way, a 154-pounder for La Jolla, finished fourth at the CIF meet Sat., Feb. 12. Assistant coach Kellen Delaney shared some of Way's story:

"As an endurance runner, he is able to wrestle for a long time without fatiguing, which definitely helped him at CIF.

"He has great shot defense (when the opponent lunges at your legs) and maintains pressure on his opponents."

Says Delaney, "Everything lined up for Ron at CIF. And he was able to win three very close matches in a row, including one overtime win."

Way goes on to the Master's meet with the other top-four finishers in each weight division Sat., Feb. 19, at Christian High.

His coach notes: Ronald wrestled his freshman year, then moved away. He only came back to LJHS's wrestling squad at mid-season this winter, as COVID came and went in waves.

Way attended South Effingham High in Guyton, Georgia, according to his information on athletic.net. He ran the 5,000 meters in 2019 in a time of 17:25.42.

In San Diego, Ron ran the 3200 meters in 11:36.55 in March 2019 in a meet at Serra High.
