The future is now.
In the sense that the Vikings' spring sports teams are poised and ready to take action.
I took a glance at La Jolla High's master schedule for sports, and saw that in a short two weeks baseball and track will be upon us.
Another glance, and softball right there.
Things are looking up for continuity and planning as we survey the landscape and see that COVID is receding--at least for now.
I went to a private event this morning (Feb. 5), and not a mask was in sight (except for my mask I had looped around my neck).
Playoffs for winter sports are right around the corner, with girls soccer, boys soccer, and others ready to boot up for the postseason. The girls soccer team at LJ has looked particularly good--whatever Coach Austin Mobley told the girls and parents worked, because in the couple of games I have photographed he had a full lineup of top local players out on the pitch. That's the first thing. Just getting them to play for your team.
And second, they were passing, coordinating, working together in a quite healthful way toward more wins.
It should be a fun time, if things continue to look up from a receding-pandemic viewpoint: The overlap of the winter and spring sports seasons, in which CIF happens for winter sports, and early spring games overlap and begin to draw our attention.
Track could be a blast. Kirra Fisk, threatening the school's two-mile record, and Payton Smith, a sprinter, both sophomores, will be ready to rock and roll shortly.
