Senior Spence Carswell had a field day, scoring both of the Vikings' goals and nearly heading in a third, as La Jolla registered a convincing 2-0 win over visiting Mira Mesa in a CIF Division 4 quarterfinal game Fri., Feb. 18.
Alongside spirited play from his teammates, Carswell first broke the scoreless duel with 33 minutes left on the clock in the second half. He added his second goal at the three-minute mark (though compensation time added another seven minutes in the half).
The second score came when the Marauders' goalie, senior Zech Yamsuan, came out from the goal to defend against a threat from the right side. That left Spence with a clear path on the left, as he dribbled a soft touch that rolled slowly into the net.
Tomas Dangaran and other members of the Viking defense played a strong game, as La Jolla advanced to a semifinal at number-two seed Crawford Tues., Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. Coach Victor Zendejas' team is seeded third.
