It just wasn't La Jolla's day. In the season opener Sat., Feb. 19, six straight Mission Hills hitters got on or received passes. It wasn't until the seventh batter hit that the Vikings recorded an out.
The end result in the top of the first was a 4-0 lead. The Grizzlies added another run in the top of the second, and cruised to an 8-0 win as part of the Pirate Classic, an annual Oceanside High tournament.
A home crowd of Viking fans was disappointed after the anticipation of the opener following months, almost two years (23 months), of COVID restrictions and waves of infection. Nary a mask was in sight, but visiting coach Neil Jamison's squad dampened the recovery.
As La Jolla coach Gary Frank indicated with an affirmative nod, "Things will get better." Starters who waited years to go out on the field to represent the local high school, and their subs were held to three hits by Mission Hills righthander Nathan Sally, who wasn't exactly throwing gas. Viking starter Kevin Steel took the loss.
La Jolla continues in the Pirate Classic after the long President's Holiday weekend Tues., Feb. 22 with a 3 p.m. game at Christian High in El Cajon.
