"Madeleine Gates" will definitely be a key, according to a Coach Drew Burdette text on the La Jolla volleyball team's upcoming season.
The 6'3" senior middle hitter-blocker, who has committed to UCLA next year, decided to concentrate only on volleyball last year as a junior after juggling basketball and club and school volleyball her freshman and sophomore years. Volleyball is her meal ticket.
Besides Gates in the middle, returners for the Vikings, who open the season at Vista Murrieta next Wed., Sept. 9, include setter Abby Waldburger, libero/defensive specialist Amanda Polcyn, outside hitter Chloe Luyties, and libero/defensive specialist Sophie Eliopulos, all seniors.
6'2" senior Savannah Guy is also back in the middle with Gates. Long-time hitter-blocker Emma Willis graduated in June and is playing at the University of Denver. Helen Lee, a senior, is back after recovering from an ACL tear a year ago.
Younger siblings of current players also populate the LJHS roster: Ashley Polcyn, a junior setter, and Dana Waldburger, a freshman.
