Week 1: La Jolla 52, Country Day 42
Yohann Ponsaty, on his 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter: "It was an inside play. Then I saw an opening, and went outside." He finished his run with yards of separation between him and his nearest Torrey defender, holding his left index finger raised high in the air.
Head Coach Jason Carter, on middle linebacker Daniel McColl's sprint to overtake LJCD quarterback Braxton "Cole" Burmeister from behind on 4th-and-4 to stop him short of a first down and ensure La Jolla's victory with 1:42 remaining in the fourth quarter: "It was a great tackle."
Carter, on his team's overall play in the season opener at LJCD: "We played really sloppy, about as sloppy as we can play. But one thing I can say is they played as a group and fought. When we went to Big Bear for preseason camp, the whole time they came together as a group. It was ugly (tonight), but I guarantee we'll get better as we go."
LJCD Coach Tyler Hales, quoted in other media: “I know it’s sounds crazy after giving up 52 points, but our defense played phenomenal.”
Carter, a former high school quarterback, on his new quarterback, Casey Brown, in his first varsity start: "His decision-making at the beginning of the game was (very) poor. In the second half it was much better. I had to jump on him."
Asked what he said to the offense after calling time out when the first two plays from scrimmage resulted in sacks: "I told them to get their heads focused. They thought because they beat Country Day 64-19 last year that they were going to do the same thing this year. You just want them to forget about that and play hard."
