Scott Rugg, the father of La Jolla's quarterback the past two seasons, Collin Rugg, watched and enjoyed the Vikings' season-opening game at Country Day Fri., Aug. 28.
The elder Rugg was texting updates from the sidelines to both Collin (who goes to bed early) and Mary Rugg, Collin's mother, as each scoring play occurred during La Jolla's wild game against the Torreys. The contest lasted three hours and 15 minutes, and involved 210 plays. Unbelievable.
Scott Rugg said that, in view of the fact his son is one of four quarterbacks that William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, has on its roster, and that there are upperclassmen ahead of him, it is very possible--even likely--that Collin would be red-shirted this year.
This means that he would be able to practice with the team, but he would be on the inactive list and would not be eligible to play in any games this season. The advantage would be that he would preserve his four years of playing eligibility. The downside, for a student as adept academically as Collin, is that he would might not want to spend five years in college to complete his four years of football eligibility.
There is a new NCAA rule this year, however, that enables a fifth-year student athlete to transfer after completing his undergraduate degree to another university to play one season, without having to sit out a season.
Until now, a transfer almost always had to sit out a year. This was a way to discourage athletes from moving around willy-nilly from college to college, creating havoc.
Bulla Graft, who, like Collin Rugg, was an All-CIF choice last year, graduated from Bishop's last June and is also at William Jewell College on a football scholarship.
Liberty, Missouri, is a short distance outside Kansas City, Missouri, to the northeast. Mr. Rugg said he spent 10 days there earlier this year as his son was getting acclimated.
Collin has never lived away from home. "It's an adjustment," proud father admitted.
As Collin is early to bed, and Missouri is two hours ahead of San Diego's time zone, Dad's text messages about the La Jolla game were going to be read by him the next morning when he woke up.
Collin has an interest in completing an undergraduate degree in business. He could stay at William Jewell, if he were to attend there an additional year, and pursue a Master's degree in business or another field.
