New Viking defensive head Randy Cowell went through formations during pre-practice video instruction, then led LJHS football players in drills alongside eight-year Head Coach Tyler Roach on the first day of Spring practice Mon., May 12.
Cowell, who coached at Escondido Charter most recently, and before that for 20 years at Valley Center, is La Jolla's new Defensive Coordinator.
The Vikings continue their 7-v-7 passing competition at La Costa Canyon Sun., May 18, followed by Mount Miguel the week after. Looming in the near future are "camps" in offensive 7-on-7 at SDSU and USD.
The Vikings are led by captains Hudson Smith, returning as Roach's QB for his senior season, and Carson Diehl, injured much of his junior season who led the county in interceptions in 2023 with nine.
Returning Viking QB Hudson Smith (white
jersey, center) talks with linebacker Charlie Martin
to his right, with safety Carson Diehl on his
left. LJ student-athletes spent "chalk talk"
time receiving video instruction on
defensive formations from DC
Randy Cowell. In near view/center left
is Aiden Farrell, running back/receiver.

Head coach Tyler Roach, entering his ninth
