La Jolla coach Gary Frank said lefthander Abel Delgadillo will start Tuesday's (5/20) game at home in the opener of the CIF Division 3 playoffs. This followed the release of the brackets for the playoffs at midday Sunday, May 18.

"With a single-elimination format, everyone is a possibility" if the starter needs relief in the game, which pits the Vikings against Westview at 4 p.m. on the Muirlands diamond, said Frank.

"The relievers will be based on the score and the game situation."

La Jolla (9-3 in the City League, 17-11 overall) goes in as the number-six seed in Division 3. The Wolverines are seeded 11th.

Also in the lower bracket with the Vikes is Bishop's, the number-seven seed. UCHS and Clairemont go second and third, respectively.

Looming in the upper bracket are top-seed Calexico and Mission Bay, the fourth seed.

Meanwhile, the Vikings ended their regular season Thurs., May 15, by eking out a non-league win over La Jolla Country Day, 7-6, in extra innings. Harper Lane hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the winning run.

Seniors were honored with their families before the game. Commented Frank: "It's always nice to get a walk-off at home on the last day of the regular season. It's always nice to beat a rival."

LJCD's program has produced Dodger standout Tommy Edman, whose father John is the long-time coach of the Torrey program. LJHS and LJCD are known to have two of the section's all-turf fields, playable in all weather.
