The 13th wasn't kind to the Vikings.

On Feb. 13, La Jolla, coming into the Open Division playoffs as the number-two seed, wasn't able to generate the offense the Vikes normally do against a tough Carlsbad team, the number-three seed whom La Jolla had beaten 8-7 Feb. 2.

Coach Amy Jennings' squad came back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits in the first half Tuesday to trail 4-3 with 1:20 left in the half. Senior Margo Tempel scored when a Lancer was excluded (like a hockey penalty) to pull within one goal.

Earlier, senior Katy Westphal fired in a shot from the back row to start La Jolla's scoring, now trailing 2-1 with 50 seconds left in the first quarter.

After lefty Emily Rod countered for a 3-1 lead, Tempel scored with eight seconds left in the first period. The Vikings were in the hunt, down 3-2.

Carlsbad coach Jamie Hanan, pacing the edge of the pool, made adjustments at halftime with the two teams entangled in a struggle, knowing each other well.

The Lancers, who had broken their pregame huddle shouting "Defense", went into a lockdown grip against La Jolla, giving up not a single goal until 4:36 left in the game (Tempel's third goal).

Meanwhile, Carlsbad notched goals behind Kendra Ammon and Alessandra Anghera, another lefthander, in the third quarter, and Ammon twice again in the fourth, pulling away at 7-3.

The final was 9-5.
