La Jolla had a great start at the CIF Division 5 Finals at Mar Vista Sat., Feb. 10, with Vikings pinning six of eight opponents in their first matches--the other two wins by decision.

Those making their foes submit included, in order, Noah Pace (113 pounds), Elias Basilio (138), Anthony Volkov (157), Jayden Williams (165), Gustav Rinaldi (175), and Jack Long (190).

Additionally, Nick Sierra (144) beat Noah Wisniew of Mountain Empire 14-4 in a major decision (eight-point margin or more). And finally, Nerva Mugisha (120) took Daryl Pollard of Calipatria, 11-8.

"It's a good start," said La Jolla head coach Kellen Delaney, still in the mat area after Long's victory. Jack, a defending Eastern League champ from last year, was wearing a shoulder wrap over his recovering right shoulder during his fall (pin) in a mere 52 seconds over Ben Richards of Liberty Charter.

Eventually, through the day, seven of these eight Vikings placed fifth or sixth in their respective weight divisions. In fifth place were Mugisha and Basilio. Sixth were Pace, Volkov, Williams, Rinaldi, and Long.

in 3:21. The senior placed sixth at the D4 Finals.
