La Jolla's boys varsity overcame a slow start, coming back from trailing Christian 9-0 and 19-14 to be tied at halftime, 22-22.

But the Vikings gave up the winning shot inside with seven seconds left to go down to defeat, 41-39, Friday evening, Jan. 14, at home in an Eastern League matchup.

The game was hard-fought and well-played between the two league rivals, La Jolla (0-2 in league, 3-14 overall in a second tough COVID-affected season) playing host to the Patriots (2-0, 6-11).

Dylan Posey, a 6'5" senior, led the Vikings with 12 points. Amir Eslamian, a 6'1" senior, had 11.

Junior Patrick Perez led the visitors with 12 points. Fellow junior Ben Felice added 11.

La Jolla's first lead in the game didn't come until 28-26 late in the third quarter.

With 3:37 left in the game, Viking forward Luke Riney, a starter on Coach Tyler Roach's football team and no stranger to contact, was assessed a technical foul after Quentian Givens, a Christian player, went flying after the two collided on the way down court. A separate defensive foul was also called on another La Jolla team member on the same play.

Givens lay on the floor for a couple of minutes after a nasty fall. He was shaken up and was examined by La Jolla's trainer. He did not return to the game.

The result was that after the four free throws--two for the foul, two for the technical--Christian now led, 34-32. Riney, with the technical being his fifth personal, fouled out of the game.

The Vikings were able to come back and knot the score at 39-all, setting the stage for Christian's winning points in the last seven seconds.
