LJ b BB: Jett

By Ed Piper

The word is that the La Jolla boys basketball program has a new player, a transfer who apparently played at Mira Mesa High the last two years.

His name is Jett Wilson. "He's good," said one observer who is knowledgeable about the program. Jett is a 5'10" senior guard.

There is some confusion in accessing his information on MaxPreps.com, the nationally-recognized website for high school sports. There is a "Jet Wilson", with one "t" in the first name, listed as having played for Mira Mesa's varsity as a sophomore. That apparently is an error in spelling.

Then there is a profile for "Jett Wilson", with two "t"'s in the first name, for not only his sophomore and junior seasons, but also this year. Maybe his former coach at Mira Mesa, Jon Pierce, expected him to be on the Marauder varsity this season. MaxPreps says the player's name was added to the Mira Mesa roster October 16. That was only three weeks ago.

In any case, Coach Paul Baranowski's squad played more than one scrimmage at Grossmont High Saturday morning, Nov. 10, in its final tune-up for Thursday's season opener against Santa Fe Christian in the Aztec Tipoff Classic at Montgomery High in the South Bay.

It is not yet known by this reporter whether the Vikings will face off with the Eagles in the New Gym or the Old Gym on that school campus.

Meanwhile, Bo Solis, the father of brothers Gabe and Diego Solis, said Friday evening they are "healing well" from their respective triple collarbone fractures in football. The elder Solis said he was hopeful the boys, both guards, could play basketball in January. The Western League schedule starts in January.

Previously, Sandy Solis, the boys' mother, had said the doctors had told the family that there was a question whether either brother would be able to return in time before the end of the basketball season. The regular season ends Feb. 8.

It is thought that this type of prognosis could be a physician's way of tamping down expectations and providing an antidote to young people's eagerness to jump back into the fray too soon.

Evan Brown, a 6'2" senior forward, is the third collarbone recuperator. His break took place Oct. 5, two weeks before the Solis' Oct. 20 mess against Christian High. So he has a fortnight jump as far as healing, and his fracture was not known to be a triple break.

Gabe and Diego are both about 5'10" in height, Gabe a senior, Diego a sophomore.
