LJ BB: Shooting background

La Jolla's coaches took the boys basketball team to Mission Bay Park to shoot on the outside baskets there.

The reason was to help prepare the players for conditions at Petco Park in their season opener Tues., Dec. 1.

"There's no shooting background," said Coach Paul Baranowski. On the temporary court laid on the infield at Petco Park, there is no wall behind the basket, as the players are used to in their home gym and in the gyms they play away games at.

It's like shooting in the dark, those who have experienced it say, when they play in large venues without an enclosure directly around the court.

Country Day boys coach Ryan Meier was quoted in media reports saying his players had trouble shooting Monday in their game at Petco Park. Monday's games didn't count as official games, while La Jolla's game Tuesday will count as a "real" game. Meier said that his Torrey team relies heavily on outside shooting. He said that if his team's game had counted, he wouldn't have chosen to play in the Bill Walton Basketball Festival at Petco Park.
