La Jolla swamped visiting Clairemont, starting right off with a goal in the opening minutes by senior returner Jenna Harmeyer, and went on to shut out the Chieftains, 6-0, in a convincing season-opening win on the Muirlands playing field Sept. 3.

Center midfielder Kelly Collins scored a goal in each half for the Vikings, the second on a penalty stroke after Clairemont goalie Kristen Roberts was called for trapping the ball by lying on it. Goalie Katja Sarain recorded the shutout for La Jolla.

Harmeyer, a captain wearing the emblematic insignia on her sock, was audibly and visibly demonstrative and vocal in urging her teammates to break out of an early funk that Coach Paula Conway called them on. At halftime, Conway gave her team plaudits for picking up their energy level after a slow start and finishing the half well.

Prior to the opener, Conway cited the six returning seniors, Sarain as a returning experienced goalie, and "a good young group moving up" as key strengths of the 2014-15 edition of the squad. Against Clairemont, she said, "I really want to see a total team effort. I want to give a lot of girls a lot of playing time."
