LJ FB: "Our last Blastoff"

None of this will be here in 2015. Well, not really.
The artificial turf will be replaced with a new surface.
The pressbox may be replaced, according to
Paula Conway. The home side stadium steps will
remain the same. The visitors side will be completely
redone with bleachers, coaches' offices, team
locker room, and restrooms. (Photo by Ed Piper)

Jesus Manzano, a junior, brought up the fact Sept. 5 was going to be the last Blastoff for his class--not just the senior class.

"It's my last Blastoff," Manzano said as we chatted before the game in the locker room that will soon be torn down as part of the Edwards Field renovation project in 2015-16. "For all of us juniors."

Unofficially, demolition of the present football field playing surface at LJHS and installation of a new surface and construction of new coaches' offices and team locker room, restrooms, concessions, and possibly a new pressbox are to begin in January 2015. The official who mentioned this date said he couldn't confirm January for sure. The previous start date announced had been December 2015.

That means that the entire 2015 varsity football schedule will be played on the road. Other teams have gone through this as their stadiums have been rebuilt or renovated--Madison two years ago, Clairemont approximately the same time. Kearny, I believe, hosted the Vikings in the famous "fog game" last season on Madison's field because of similar construction at the Komets' sports site.

Athletic Director Paula Conway and everyone else would have loved for work on the improvements to begin the moment the graduation ceremony ended in June. "It's the way contracts are let," Conway said during the past school year.

Enhancements will also include a tennis pavilion, allowing fans to watch tennis under a shady roof to be constructed down on the location of the present tennis courts, from my understanding.
