Jake Harvey brings it.
By the time Harvey, a senior on La Jolla's wrestling team, came to the mat in the 160-pound match Tues., Dec. 1, a little fortitude was needed.
The Vikings, with enough wrestlers to populate 11 of the 14 weight classes in the varsity tilt against Chula Vista, was a bit of the Little Engine That Could--trying hard, but suffering some falls in the process.
So, it was "Gong Time" shortly after 5 p.m. in the Scripps Ranch, where a quad meet was being held as the season kickoff event. On an adjoining mat, the host Falcons were facing Hilltop.
Harvey, reminding one of another Harvey, Matt of the New York Mets, in the recent Major League Baseball playoffs, came out with a presence. His face was visibly determined. His posture communicated he was at home on the mat. And he immediately went to his task after the standing faceoff to begin the 160 match.
He dominated his Spartan opponent. Just what the doctor ordered. Harvey, part of the "new" Vikings wrestling team, played a major role last year as a junior. Now, with La Jolla's squad beefed up even more after the dry spell of two years ago, he can lead the Vike grapplers into new territory.
