La Jolla's varsity wrestling team has wrestlers to fill 11 of the 14 weight classes, according to strength coach Ryan Lennard, who is in close contact with the program run by Coach Kellen Delaney.
The Vikings open the season Tues., Dec. 1, with a quad meet at Scripps Ranch High at 4 p.m. Another team involved in the meet, along with LJHS and the host Falcons, is San Ysidro.
Among those expected to wrestle for La Jolla is Elliot Austin, a sophomore in his second year on the squad. Austin has a background in karate, as well.
The way high school wrestling works is the coaches agree what weight class they will start the meet with. Then wrestlers rotate through the weight classes until the meet is concluded.
In the weight classes in which the Vikings don't have a competitor of that weight, they take a forfeit to their opponent--unless the other team doesn't have a wrestler in that weight class either.
Lennard, before becoming strength coach at La Jolla High, served as an assistant coach on the wrestling team.
