Coach Darice Carnaje features six returners from last year's La Jolla basketball squad on a roster of 13 players that opened its season earlier this week.
Senior starters Satori Roberson, a 6'1" forward, and Paulina Cardenas, a 5'8" forward, lead the returners for Carnaje's first squad at La Jolla. Carnaje was the highly successful coach at OLP for many years, and continues to coach girls tennis there.
Other returners for the Vikings include starter Rebecca Saul, a scrappy sophomore guard, senior Stephanie Garcia, and junior Kate Miller, coming back for her third year on the varsity and her third coach in as many years.
Abby Ward, a guard, is the sixth returner. She is a fighter, a worker, and helped set the tone for aggressiveness along with Saul on last year's squad.
A couple of members of the La Jolla softball team have come over, including 5'8" junior Ava Verbrugghen, and 5'3" junior Sara Tyrus.
Two freshmen populate Carnaje's new roster, Katrina Kurtchi, listed at 5'9", and Si Young Kim, 5'6".
Filling out the team are Sina Anae, a 5'9" sophomore, Petra Eaton, a 5'4" sophomore, and Imani Trinidad-Gallagher, a 5'8 sophomore. Gallagher was expected to enroll at La Jolla High and play point guard for the Viking basketball team a year ago. With her now at La Jolla and on the team, we can only look forward to what is in store. Her Prezi online says she is a fan of LeBron James and the Miami Heat, but that may have to be updated, since LeBron no longer plays for the Heat.
