After La Jolla led Mount Miguel the entire game, the Matadors--for the first time since 2-0 at the start of the contest--went ahead on a three-pointer by junior Moustapha Arbab with 1:53 left and held on to win 51-47 in a heart-breaking loss for the Vikings Fri., Jan. 2. The matchup came on the first day of the annual Montgomery tourney.
Viking guard Cole Hein made an acrobatic shot underneath, faking his defender back, then stepping through to flip the ball in the basket off-balance as Coach Paul Baranowski's team built a lead that reached 11 points at 41-30 to begin the fourth quarter.
But the Matadors' Brooklyn James responded a short time later with a whirling shot, then completed the old-school three-point play by sinking the free throw to cut La Jolla's advantage to four, 41-37.
"Our press was effective, and we were able to convert," said Mount Miguel coach Christine Fitzgerald after the game.
Their pressure produced turnovers, building to Arbab's shot beyond the arc in the closing minutes.
