As written about previously in this space, the Vikings football team circa 1991-1995 was the total bomb and dominated league play. Under Coach Dick Huddleston, La Jolla won the league championship all five of those years--including a 20-game win streak overlapping seasons.

This was corroborated by a recent visit to the Alumni Offices on campus and a peak at yearbooks from the era.

In 1991, Gene Edwards Stadium (named after one of Huddleston's predecessors) received lights to illuminate night football games. "For it was to be the first season in over ten years that the football team was able to play under the lights," students Adriana Garibay and Kari Danenhauer wrote in the 1991-1992 school yearbook.

Fans were treated to quite a delight: The '91 Vikings won 12 straight games, and E.J. Watson, a star running back, helped lead them to the CIF Division 2 Finals, losing to El Camino. The previous week, in a home game shrouded in a thick fog that rolled in, Huddleston's squad won a 50-49 thriller over San Pasqual in the semifinals.

The 1991-1992 yearbook compares
him to Superman:
"He is faster than a speeding bullet."
