LJ g golf: Teaching the 'newbies'

By Ed Piper

La Jolla assistant golf coach Christie Quinn had all 16 of the Viking golfers--"all three teams", the coach said--huddled by the vines at the Riverwalk Peformance Center. (All but one golfer who hasn't returned yet this fall.)

She was teaching them what each of the course markers mean: yellow, red... She had head coach Aaron Quesnell demonstrate how to do a drop shot after a ball hit out of bounds: "You used to drop the ball behind you while standing," he said. Quinn called out, "They're weren't alive then."

To which the head coach said, "Forget it," and showed the present method: arm extended, dropping from behind to or next to the knee.

Why the basics?

"We're doing this because of the newbies," Quesnell explained to a visitor.

Viking golfers stood in relaxed (though sweaty) posture, lined along the plants bordering the driving range at the front of the Riverwalk complex. La Jolla plays many of its home matches on the Riverwalk courses.

Six freshmen populate the "B" or youngest group, including Cate Alexander, Callahan Armstrong, Stella Artukovich, Chloe Lynn, Paige Repp, and Ella Stevens.

Prior to the basic instruction on golf course etiquette--earlier the golfers practiced fixing a divot on the green, with coaches checking their work--Quinn held a lengthy meeting on team items around a circular table at the Performance Center.

Amalia Parzen, the Vikings' number-one golfer, still had not participated in a competitive match this fall. She and teammates were to take care of that the following day, Wed., Sept. 4, at Rancho Bernardo.
