Amanda Combs Warford, head coach for La Jolla High field hockey, had something she wanted to say last week. "We're going to be in the Open League championships this year," said the seventh-year coach, who was big enough to follow Paula Conway, an Olympic Center coach who was a predecessor of hers for the Vikings.
Conway, now Athletic Director at rival Bishop's, knew a good thing when she saw it. During her tenure as AD at LJHS, she hired Combs Warford. It stabilized the Viking program, and has paid big dividends in the success and future of La Jolla High field hockey.
The Vikings began tryouts Monday morning, Aug. 7, in Edwards Stadium, with about 40 girls. An afternoon session was scheduled, as well. Said Tucker Warford, who also coaches the girls, "We scared some freshmen off. We usually have higher numbers coming out."
Amanda said, "Several players are at a tournament in Hawaii with (Coach Tom) Atwell for water polo, so we should be at about 50 when they come back."
