"We're going to get Diego some reps," said La Jolla head coach Tyler Roach Mon., Aug. 20, three days after Solis, his back-up sophomore quarterback, moved the Vikings to their only two touchdowns in the second half in their season opener at Central and supplied some excitement with his scrambling in the backfield.
"We're going to play to both their strengths," Roach said, referring to his starting quarterback Carsten Fehlan, who was removed as a precaution in the third quarter after he fell on his head awkwardly, and Solis, a new member of the varsity this year.
"He didn't really take a blow to the helmet," the head coach clarified in reference to the play that led the coaching staff to want to exercise extra caution and put Fehlan on the sideline the rest of the game. They saw enough to want to play it safe and keep Carsten out, though Roach said his QB is fine.

Related to the two-quarterback situation, Roach showed a lot of wisdom in wanting to support his senior starter, while acknowledging the fact that the underclassman Solis, in the two-TD effort, demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in directing the Vikings on two successful drives.
"He brings some energy," was the way the coach put it of the 5'9" southpaw.
