Though school still hasn't started yet, there is some buzz around the La Jolla High campus about the freshman football team.
Last week, in the Viking frosh's season opener at Central High Thurs., Aug. 16, quarterback Jackson Stratton threw 55 times and passed for a total of 385 yards.
A Central High parent, engaged in conversation before the varsity game the following day, gushed over the opponent's performance. "Their quarterback was fantastic," he said. "And number 13 (Max Raulston) was quite a receiver.)
Without statistics readily available, the Viking freshmen apparently scored 50 points in the contest, despite the withering heat, which was well above 100 degrees for the afternoon game.
"His father wanted him to be part of something new, instead of just a slot in an established program," said Jackson's mother, Cindi Stratton, who serves on the La Jolla High Foundation board and heads up spirit, which involves promoting events like Blast Off, whiteouts and blackouts, Homecoming, Senior Night, and other occasions in all sports.
Raulston had some scoring receptions (he had three in the freshman team's scrimmage the week before). Other receivers did well, too, according to reports. And La Jolla had no snaps on offense called for flags, despite the fact their center is brand new to football.
Freshman coach Craig Gagliardi has to be pleased.
