La Jolla's talented water polo team, as expected, clocked Westview 13-5 in the preseason Draz Classic at Granite Hills High Sat., Aug. 11, on a hot day in East County (93 degrees).
"We still have a lot of chemistry to work out," said Viking coach Tom Atwell on the pool deck after the game, "where guys want the ball," and so forth.
"There's a lot of upside, too," the veteran coach said, eyeing the reporter's notepad. "The guys look athletic, so that's good."
La Jolla built a lead of 4-1 in the first quarter, then the Wolverines edged closer at 4-3 in the second quarter before the Vikes pulled away to a 9-3 edge at the end of three quarters, and 11-3 during the final period.
Senior Cole Atwell, the First Team All-CIFer and Second Team All-American, scored La Jolla's first two goals for a 2-1 lead with 3:11 left in the first quarter. Jake Fulks then dished another goal, before Atwell came back with a hat trick goal. The first period ended 4-2, Westview battling gamely.
Fulks, a junior, then scored the Vikings' only goal in the second stanza. The half concluded with La Jolla leading narrowly, 5-3.
Sophomore Rhys Bugelli, whose two older sisters were standouts for La Jolla, was able to net a pair of goals in the third quarter in front of his proud parents. Atwell employed all hands in the scrimmage.
The Vikings next scrimmage Vista at home Fri., Aug. 17, after which they will traditionally choose their cap numbers Mon., Aug. 20. Cole Atwell said he is going to go for number 13 again, as, "That was my father's number."
