I recognize sibling rivalry when I see it: La Jolla right-hander Alex Monell--pitching under-handed!--to his younger sister Ariana.
Vikings softball coach Andrea Denham emailed baseball coach Gary Frank last year about pitting the two teams against each other, and on Tues., May 22, 2018, the "Battle of the Batters" finally came to fruition.
The baseball players recognized that shortstop Josie Sinkeldam can play. She of the school career record in hits in softball.
A couple or three baseball-siders took mark at the left field fence on the softball field. Aidan "Hype" Suljic blasted one that bounced on the street beyond the fence. Another shot hit a tree in front of the house directly in the line of fire in straightaway left field.
"Hit opposite," Frank called out after the bouncing shot. It's lucky a window didn't get broken.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the game. The girls had thumping music on their portable music box projecting from the home dugout. The visitors dugout, with its makeshift end enclosure, was occupied by the baseball players.
Noah Brown, an infielder by trade, played right field, center field, third base, and first base, if not more positions, during the informal seven-inning game. (I won't reveal the score posted on the scoreboard.)
Ariana Monell took a turn in the pitcher's circle for the girls. "I haven't pitched since I was 12," she said while warming up far down the left field line in the bullpen.
