I'm in the den of the enemy right now, subbing at La Costa Canyon High. So the "Mav Nation" is pretty stoked about their boys volleyball team's five-game win over our boys from La Jolla Sat., May 19, in the Open Division championship match at San Marcos High.
"It was quite a match," said an administrator who was in attendance. "It started late, because of the earlier championships in other divisions. Then it went five games, so I got out of there after 9 p.m."
LCC and La Jolla went to the mat for the title last year--also a five-game match--with Coach Dave Jones' Vikings winning out in another wild match (I didn't attend) in which he told me the ball at one point hit an overhanging basketball hoop that had been retracted, then fell to a place advantageous to La Jolla. These things happen in multi-purpose high school gyms.
The administrator's comment was, "La Jolla has three players who are going to play at big colleges--Long Beach State (Gabe Vargas), UCSD (he didn't remember who--I asked if it was hitter Luke Lentin or setter Berkeley Miesfeld), and I think Ohio State (Nathaniel Gates)." (I haven't verified any of those with Jones.)
"Vargas was hitting into the net," according to this school employee.
Anyway, it was quite a match, as he said. I congratulated his school on the win. He said LCC travels to Loyola of Los Angeles in the first round of state regional playoffs, and La Jolla to another school in either Orange County or Los Angeles. Westview defeated Sage Creek for third place in the Open Division for the sake of placement in the state regionals as well.
