La Jolla's Nathaniel Gates, who leads the Vikings' eighth-ranked volleyball team in the nation with 87 blocks, was one of 20 players named to the 2018 U.S. Boys' Youth National Training Team.
The 6'7" junior middle hitter-blocker, a First Team All-CIF choice as a sophomore, will train with the rest of the squad at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs May 25-June 4.
Then the roster will slim down to 12 to compete in the NORCECA U19 (Under 19) Continental Championship in Costa Rica June 6-10.
That event is a qualifier for the 2019 FIVB U19 World Championship.
Says Dave Jones, Gates' coach at La Jolla High, "He's a fierce competitor and perfectionist, who is always honing his skills--both offensively and defensively. He's a huge presence at the net. He's one of our more consistent servers."
Gates is one of only two team members from San Diego. Adam Chang, a 6'5" middle blocker at Westview High, is the other.
