To the untrained eye, the Vikings, in their 2025-26 season opener, looked like a well-oiled machine.
Fifth-year coach Austin Mobley told the players in the pregame huddle, "Things are going to be disorganized in some areas."
But what La Jolla brought Wednesday night, Dec. 12, under a "Cold Moon" (super moon with chilly temperatures) looking like a shiny silver dollar, was enough to down visiting Fallbrook 2-0 behind first half goals by Zara Griffis and Hannah Woolf.
Griffis, a senior wing, punched in a rebound into the far left of the goal after a deflected direct kick. Woolf, a junior and one of three Woolf sisters on the same varsity team, took a pass from Maddy Williams from the left to drill in her kick.
Mobley, whose squad appears to be stocked with a wealth talent, played several players in the free-substitution system. The Vikings would look to improve greatly on last year's campaign, with the majority of players back from 2024-25 and a year older, a year more mature. La Jolla won only one game last year and failed to win a game in the City League.
Asked late in the game how things were, junior Norah Zadeyan, walking down the sidelines with a teammate, said, "We scored two goals. That's good," a smile on her face. She earlier clarified that while she was sitting out Wednesday, she would play Fri., Dec. 5 at home against Helix.
