Austin Jones put on quite a halftime show to a packed house in the Big Gym March 10, 2009. The crowd came to see the Viking boys basketball team, which was on the verge of winning its second CIF title in a row (and one call with the clock running out away from a third a year later).
One thing about having thousands of images taken through 20 years of La Jolla High sports is that you forget, then you go back and find nuggets of events years before.
These images of Matt Jones' brother--Matt was a standout volleyball and basketball player for the Vikings--show a huge crowd enjoying Austin ride a unicycle, balance a coil on a string, and contort his body so that his legs hug his body, his feet behind his back and right ear. Amazing stuff.
Unfortunately, that night, Coach Kamal Assaf's Vikings dropped a 60-46 decision to Canyon High of Anaheim in the Southern California Regionals. Three days prior, La Jolla defeated Cathedral Catholic 44-39 for the CIF title.
