Freshman Denver Harris, who said he just began running seriously last summer after graduating from Muirlands Middle School, maintains the "DJH" tradition of initials in his family.

Asked if his parents were enamored with the city of Denver, Harris, instead, explained that his parents were looking for a name that included those initials--they had run out of other options.

So it wasn't a fascination with a "Rocky Mountain high", or anything to do with the state of Colorado. Denver, whose middle name is James, was given the name to keep to the "DJH" pattern popular in his family.

Asked about his warm-up regimen, running laps an hour before a competition, the ninth-grader said it was a way to avoid "running cold"--going into a race unprepared, with the shock of the pace being a jolt to the body.

He ran several laps around a practice field at the end of the UCHS track before his race, then did some quicker sprints on the infield of the stadium turf field to get ready for the start of the 3200 event.
