Mike + the Mechanics' All I need is a miracle/All I need is you reverberating in a sportswriter's mind, La Jolla's girls soccer team--after an initial bumpy start, giving up an opening goal to visiting Valley Center--proceeded to begin to unfold that miracle, marching to a dominant 4-1 win in initial play in CIF Division 3 Fri., Feb. 17.

Coach Austin Mobley's squad, seeded number two in the lower bracket, rallied behind the equalizer by senior Addison Dutton with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.

Right as the second half opened--by Mobley's count, 18 seconds; by the near-sideline referee's count, 23 seconds--junior Ruby Davis added another goal for a 2-1 edge.

Then, the Vikings working hard as a unit, the momentum shifting to the home team in front of a larger home crowd as the evening developed, Valley Center's fans traveling well, as well, junior sprinter Payton Smith was inserted into the game by Mobley.

Soon after, with 18:05 remaining in the second half, Smith received a pass inside midfield and broke for an opening. She deposited the ball in the left side of the net past Jaguar goalkeeper Madison Latulip. The Vikings led, 3-1.
