LJ b soccer: 3rd day of tryouts - Photos 11/10

By Ed Piper

La Jolla's boys continued their march to be propelled toward the completion of the first week of practice and their first scrimmage--at Lincoln Mon., Nov. 14--as new coach Pilar Flores, Class of '93, experimented with different combinations and took player leaders' input to the most effective ends.

In particular, center midfielder, senior Roman Altamirano, and Flores were conferring during tryouts/practice Thursday evening, Nov. 10--just before Friday's Veterans Day Holiday, when there would be no school--as returning varsity players and individuals from last year's junior varsity scrimmaged on a cold, cold night at Edwards Field.

While Marley LaFond played in goal at one end of the field, he alternated with Heidi Weis, a sophomore who tried out for the varsity last year but was told the girls team needed her, so that's where she went. Weis went to middle school in Golden Hill two years ago.

Weis seemed quick, agile, and strong, but as one teammate joked with her, "Heidi, how come you didn't make any saves?", she replied, "There wasn't any action (in goal). No one did anything."

The moon, a full one the night before, was
degraded to whatever one day away from
a full moon is called.
