Two stars in La Jolla's universe shined brightly Thurs., April 14, as the Vikings traveled to Hoover and solved the Cardinals in both girls' and boys' competitions--wearing the same black and red as their opponents.

Payton Smith, fresh off her 6th-place finish in the Open 400 meters at the Arcadia Invitational Sat., April 9, and 8th place in the Open 100, took a little break at Hoover by running in the "non-scoring" 100 meters. Her time was yet another 12.0 seconds, to pair up with her 12.0 back on March 3 against Sage Creek.

For anybody listening, these are not your normal high school times. These are phenomenal times, undergirded by other 12.0-plus times recorded on other occasions.

Maybe that's why the sophomore wanted to take a break from the competitive races, and give a chance to her teammates: senior Ebony Crandle, about to graduate in less than two months from LJHS, then matriculate at USC soon after, won the 100 meters "scoring" race with a 12.3-second time. Elena Farrar, a freshman, cooked up a 12.9 time right behind her for the occasion.

Then, fellow sophomore Kirra Fisk followed up her own Arcadia Invitational appearance with an 11:13.5 time in the 3200 meters, ahead of constant companion Daphne Mayer in 12:534.6.

Fisk doubled by finishing second in the 800 meters in 2:28.0, just behind teammate Scarlett Slagter in 2:27.0 and narrowly nipping Mayer, who finished third in 2:29.0.
