Tanner Shimp, a 162-pound wrestler from La Jolla High, shone on a rainy, windy day in the City Conference Championships Sat., Feb. 2, by placing second in his weight class in the prestigious tournament held at Cathedral Catholic High.

Shimp, a sophomore who has shown perseverance in gaining more and more proficiency as a wrestler in Coach Kellen Delaney's program, decisioned Malakai Chappell of Madison 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Then, in the semifinals, the upper-weight 10th-grader pinned Nelson Poole of Point Loma in 3:22 (1:22 of the second period) to reach the finals.

Though he lost in the finals, the Viking gained 18 points for his team and went the farthest of any LJHS wrestler in the tournament, which included Eastern, Western, and Central League schools in the area.

La Jolla competes in the Eastern League.
