Junior Avi Cavaiola turned into a rapid-fire scoring machine in the Vikings' match against San Marcos Sat., Dec. 6, netting eight goals as Coach Tom Atwell's La Jolla team moved out to 7-2, 11-5, and 13-6 leads to take control of their first match on day two of the Rancho Bernardo Tournament.
Cavaiola, who starred in the Viking offense as a sophomore, took fastbreak passes from goalie Lucia Vega, worked one-on-one against Knight defenders, and even tipped a shot into the cage for a variety of goals from her multi-faceted skill set.
Another team member Atwell describes as an "impact" field player, fellow junior Avery Edstrom, who plays center defense, scored three early goals to augment Avi's efforts. La Jolla, which won 17-1 and 14-7 on day one of the RB Tourney to win its bracket, 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.
That advantage grew to 8-3 late in the first half.
Atwell inserted freshman Carys Villano after starting Sophia Trinidad, a junior, along with his offensive aces Cavaiola, Cora Pfau, and Edstrom, in addition to senior captain Stella Tezcan and Taylor Goldstein. Villano, one of four freshman on the La Jolla squad, played significant minutes during the tournament over the weekend.
"She's gonna be good," commented one observer of the young Carys.
