LJ FB: DC Cowell announces starters

a player tries to rip the short tether

he is holding in each hand from a

teammate or drag him into the plastic

trash barrel set in the middle.

New Viking Defensive Coordinator Randy Cowell, who has been very open about communicating his plans and schemes for the defensive unit so far this summer with this reporter, announced his starters in all three position areas--defensive linemen, linebackers, and defensive backs--before La Jolla's intrasquad scrimmage/workout Sat., August 9, on the newly-patched Edwards Stadium surface.

Cowell, who engineered the defense for Valley Center for 23 years, gave out the following names and positions:

DEFENSIVE LINE

Dylan Haugum, Defensive End (on the strong side)

Luke Searlecripe, tackle

Anthony Lopez, noseguard

Nico Bardaro, Drop End (defensive end for the weak side)

LINEBACKERS

"Money" - Taylor Jeffery, senior

"Will" - Sean Bannon, sophomore - front side, "A" gap (while Asher Sternberg is out)

"Mike" - Charlie Martin, senior returner

"SAM" - Joseph Crudo, junior

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Left cornerback - Lukas Grismer

Free safety - Carson Diehl

Right cornerback - Drake Weise
