La Jolla coach Tom Atwell had seven juniors in the game when he called a timeout with 3:19 left in regulation time at JSerra Thursday, August 28.

Though the Vikings went down, 18-16, in two overtimes to the private Catholic school in San Juan Capistrano, returning All-CIF offensive player Dexter Black and his six classmates from the 11th grade showed where the team was going this season.

Besides Addison Calhoon in goal, the juniors-only lineup at that crucial point in the contest consisted of Barney Pearce, a defender, Henry Glenister, Ryan Murray, Quinn Daniels, and Ryder Jaseniuk (pronounced "ja-SEN-ick").

Daniels was phenomenal at the point in offense, scoring seven goals when La Jolla needed them. But Black, who comes from a line of fine water polo players, was the linchpin in Atwell's offense, plus he fired up the team as he matures and fills out his role on the squad as an upperclassmen.

It was a long trip to end up and lose, but La Jolla's program--one of the elite ones in Southern California--seeks out top opponents, even when the Vikes have to travel a distance to find them.
