Rewarding four years of applying herself and putting in the necessary hard work, Viking 122-pounder Matisse Pickett recorded a quick--one minute, 36 seconds--pin in La Jolla's dual meet at San Diego High School Wed., Jan. 22.
It was a dramatic setting, with narrow spotlights the only luminaries brightening the SDHS gym with the lights out. And it was fitting for the senior, who ascended to team captain in November in a show of her male and female teammates' respect for the serious way in which she practices her craft.
Prior to the fall (in wrestling terminology), the pink-braided wrestler took Caver David Enriquez down in the first period for three points. That was the score when she recorded her pin in 1:36.
Ian Fleming, another victorious Viking in the Eastern League meet, scored a pin just prior to Matisse's quick win. The redheaded freshman at 115 pounds took 5:33--most of the three rounds scheduled--to hold Aiden Saucedo's shoulders to the mat. He has shown a lot of proficiency in his first year for Coach Kellen Delaney's squad.
Later in the varsity portion of the program, 144-pound junior Liam Kressin went for a pin in 1:06 of the first period. Like Pickett, Kressin recorded a takedown before dominating Emiliano Springer to record the fall.
